On the northern shores of the gulf of Kassandra, in a green area of olive groves and vineyards, between the communities of Vatopedi and Ormylia, the women's Holy Cross and Patriarchal Congregation of the Annunciation of the Theotokos, known as the monastery of Ormylia and Metochi of the Holy Monastery of Simonos, was founded in 1974 Stone of Mount Athos. It is the largest women's monastery in Greece with approximately 120 nuns and with ecumenical influence.
We have evidence of the existence of the plain stock since the 12th century. On the site there was a main building from 1903, a small chapel dedicated to the Annunciation of the Virgin and a few small storage areas.
In 1974 it was bought by the Holy Monastery of Simonos Petras of Agioreitis and under the guidance of the elder Emilianos of Simonopetritos (he fell asleep in May 2019), it was given for the establishment of the female brotherhood. It developed rapidly and, under the wings of the spiritual heritage of Agioreita, the metochi of Simonopetra is a model of the monastic community in Greece.
The wonderful facilities with the mosaic floors and wall paintings crafted by the nuns, are combined with painting, weaving workshops, a priest's office, a doctor's office, livestock units, etc.
