Metamorfosi of the Past...
Discover the History of the Place
A hundred years ago (1924)... refugees from the villages of Cappadocia, mainly from the province of Nigde and the area around Smyrna, were relocated.
The group of families from the Cappadocian communities—the first residents of Metamorfosi—were initially transferred to Thessaloniki and from there, on ships they chartered, to Halkidiki. Specifically, they disembarked at the beach Livaditsi, just below the current settlement of the teachers.
They immediately made their way and settled at the monastery of Saint John, a metochion of the Dionysiou Monastery of Mount Athos, known as Vozina.
The journey of the refugees from the Smyrna area was much more difficult, as they fled under persecution.
They initially took refuge at the port of Cesme and, with the help of Greek ships, disembarked in Chios. From there, after a relatively short period, they were transferred to Thessaloniki and, with the assistance of the E.A.P. (Refugee Settlement Commission), they were permanently settled in the Kozani area. Although hospitable, they never took a liking to it, as they came from coastal areas.
They immediately made multiple appeals and protests for their relocation, a request that was accepted by the E.A.P. after a considerable period. Eventually, they were transferred from Kozani through Thessaloniki to the Halkidiki area, to the aforementioned metochion of the Dionysiou Monastery, alongside the Cappadocian exchangees. They remained there for about two years in a productive coexistence until the time came for the final decision, pressured by the E.A.P. for the final resolution on where and how the state would intervene for the arrangement of the area and their permanent settlement, which eventually took place at the current location.
The area's official renaming was achieved in 1927 by the decision of the Ministry of the Interior during the era of Alexandros Zaimis. According to the issued Government Gazette 179A of 30/8/1927 "On the renaming of communities and settlements," "The settlement Metochion Vozina of the Vatopedi community is renamed to 'Metamorfosi'...".
The residential unit gained autonomous legal status in 1946 with its conversion into a community under the name METAMORFOSI-Government Gazette 26/9/1946.

Discover the Magic of the Place
Metamorfosi is the seat of the local community of Metamorfosi with a permanent population of 600 residents. It belongs administratively to the municipal unit of Ormylia of the municipality of Polygyros. It is about 90 kilometers from Thessaloniki and 30 kilometers from Nea Moudania and Polygyros. Geographically, it is located at the innermost part of the Toroneos Gulf, at the beginning of the Sithonia peninsula, on a wooded hillside and next to the sea.
Before the settlement of the Asia Minor refugees in 1925, the Metamorfosi area was a metochion of the Dionysiou Monastery of Mount Athos and the original site of the Athonite monastery dedicated to the prophet Saint John the Baptist. Today, two kilometers from the village, is the Holy Hermitage of Timios Prodromos, a women's monastery founded in 1975. In 1950, the first children's camp was established in the settlement. Since then, Metamorfosi has had four children's camps. The main occupations of the residents are tourism services, fishing, olive cultivation, production of excellent olive oil, and beekeeping.
